I can’t recommend Tessa Baker’s painting holiday more. Although more than 3 months have passed, I think about the class almost daily – our week with Tessa was so special in every way! I dream of the colors, I frequently use Tessa’s palette now (so different from the cool, Scandinavian palette that I have grown accustomed to), I dream of our venues, the light, the ambiance and the easy flow of our paintbrushes. Everything about the setting encouraged us to see, observe, sketch, paint, and internalize so many details into our work. We couldn’t not sketch, sketch, sketch and paint, paint, paint – so we did! After 3 months, I am still using the brilliant colors in a completely different way than I would have before.
A very different kind of painting trip!
The Camargue is unique region and very different to the Provence that most people think of. Only a stone’s throw away from the beautiful villages of Baux and St Remy, the landscape of the Camargue is quite a dramatic change. Flat marsh landscapes, rice fields not poppy fields. Salt marshes rather than lavender fields. The white horses of the Camargue and the pink flamingoes along with many other beautiful birds and wild animals, not forgetting the famous black bulls and the otters that swim amongst the bull rushes. All of these things make this beautiful region a painters paradise.
I have been painting in the Camargue for the last 20 years and I am finally ready to share this place that holds a huge part of my heart.
Your Art Course in the Camargue:
An Overview of the week in the Camargue
The course runs from Saturday to Saturday.
I will pick you up from the airport in Marseille or the TGV in Marseille after midday.
On arrival, you will be welcomed with a drink and snack and shown your rooms. You have time to settle in, perhaps go for a little walk… Then we will all meet for an introductory chat and we will discuss the week together. Our lovely chef Anne will serve a sumptuous dinner for us on the terrace. We will finish at 4pm most days and this will give you a chance to walk by the sea, walk around Saintes-Mariesde-la Mer and visit the famous church there or simply rest before the evening meal.
Breakfast at 9 am. Start class at 10 am with a stop for lunch, finish 4 pm.
On the first day you will become familiar with your materials and learn about colour and water colour techniques. In the afternoon I will guide you in the composition of and painting simple water colour landscapes. I will also teach you colour mixing and the colours that I use for this area.
Breakfast at 8 am leave at 8.30 am. Finish painting 4 pm.
For me one of the most beautiful aspects of the Camargue is the light on the water. On Monday we will go to the very edge of where the marsh meets the sea and paint in the morning light. I will give a demonstration and then help you with your own composition. We will go back to the Villa for lunch and a rest and then in the afternoon I will teach you painting techniques ready for the Tuesday when we will go to the ornithological Park to paint the hundreds of Pink Flamingo’s that reside there.
Tuesday. The day of Pink flamingoes
We will leave the villa at 9.30 am and get to the park very soon after. In the morning I will demonstrate how I paint flamingoes and give you some simple exercises to do. We will have a picnic lunch and then in the afternoon you will paint on your own with guidance from me when you want it.
Arles for the Morning.
Today is an early day, we leave for the market in Arles at 7 am. The Arles Market is amazing and well worth a visit, we might even include the Roman Arena there if we have time. Then home for a late lunch and a rest. The sun setting on the marshes is mesmerisingly beautiful and on this evening I will demonstrate a water colour sketch give you guidance on what colours to use then set you free to paint on your own, with my help at hand.
Thursday. Aigues Mortes
A beautiful fortified city very well preserved. We will spend the day here. In the morning I will give you exercises in perspective and painting buildings and we will have lunch at a local bistro and in the afternoon we will paint the beautiful drawbridge of bridge that goes over the moat.
Today will be a local day painting the marshes, lunch at the villa and painting the flamingos in the afternoon. Then an early dinner and drinks to end a lovely week and go over the weeks work together.
Early breakfast and pack. Back to the airport to continue ever onward.
